There were thousands out today, I’ve never seen Plymouth so crowded. There were stages set up all over and screens on the Hoe. The Hoe itself was packed, there were even signs warning about capacity— ON THE HOE!! It was amazing! I also got free stuff. Samsung and CocaCola were there, along with BBC. Everyone was cheering and the excitement was electric and energizing. Seeing it in person was breathtaking, along with seeing the final light of the Calderon before the journey through England resumes tomorrow. The first day of the Torch finished in Plymouth and I am proud to have seen it.

Lord Mayor’s Day (May 19, 2012)
Today I put in a load of laundry, and while it was going, I decided to scout out Plymouth’s festivities, knowing I’ll return after my laundry is done.
I have never seen the city so crowded! The big screen in the city centre was fully decor-ed in Olympic stuff, a main stage was set up in front of it. All down Armada way there were more stages with multiple acts and musicians, along with street performers in between. There were even a ton of people dressed up as Star Wars characters, I even saw a Grandma Obi Wan!! It was incredible. The Hoe was packed as well, and out on the water were all the big battleships and smaller sailboats and speed boats, as well as a giant cruise ship embarking on a long-term cruise. This thing must have had 8 stories!!
There were fencing teams, rowing challenges, charities taking donations, religious crazies, paper-torch making activities, and face painting for kids all over the place. The torch is coming through at 8 this evening.
I will be back in town probably around 5, taking as many photos as I can.
Even though everyone who I’ve asked says they aren’t hyped about the Olympics, the atmosphere here says otherwise. Maybe that’s why I haven’t been sleeping!
The weather is stunning and warm and I love it.

It only started happening in April.
